EducationWe are proud of our work with students in the Clatsop and Tillamook Counties area to increase their awareness of and interest in our American heritage. The Astoria Chapter, NSDAR, has sponsored, the annual DAR American History Essay contest for fifth-grade students in seventeen schools, the Junior American Citizens (JAC) and a Good Citizens Scholarship Award to a graduating high school senior in seven area high schools.
Several chapter members also participate in the SMART reading program at local schools. PatriotismThe chapter sponsors a flag retirement ceremony, each year at the Fort Stevens Historic Park area on June 14.
In 2019, Astoria Chapter, NSDAR provided patriotic banners to the city of Astoria for display during the month of July. |
Every year, Astoria Chapter, NSDAR, observes the tradition of celebrating Constitution Week in September. Our chapter places beautiful displays for Constitution Week in local businesses and libraries.
On Memorial Day, members in association with the local American Legion participate in a remembrance ceremony at a local cemetery. DAR flags are also placed on the graves of former members at several area cemeteries. Each summer, Astoria Chapter, NSDAR, members participate in the Relay for Life to remember those members and friends who deal with cancer.
